Rolling shots: how car chase footage actually gets made in Dubai

The shot where a moving car looks alive - wheels blurred, city sliding past - isn't luck. It's a second vehicle, a gimbal, and a lot of radio chatter.

You know the shot even if you don't know its name. A car moving through frame, wheels a blur, the road and the skyline sliding past behind it, the whole thing so smooth it looks like the camera is floating. That's a rolling shot, and it's the single most misunderstood thing in car video. People think it's a fast car and a steady hand. It's actually a second car, a small pile of rigging, and three people talking on radios.

I shoot cars for a living in Dubai - a lot of them expensive, most of them not mine, all of them needing to look alive on screen. A parked car is a photo problem. A moving car is a logistics problem that happens to have a camera pointed at it. Here's how the good ones actually get made, and why the bad ones are so easy to spot.

What a rolling shot actually is

A rolling shot is any shot where both the subject car and the camera are moving. That's the whole trick. If the camera is moving at the same speed as the car, the car appears frozen relative to the lens - sharp and still - while everything else in the world streaks past. Wheels spin into a blur, the background smears, and your brain reads speed and life even if you're only doing 40 km/h. Done right you can make a slow, safe pass look like a getaway.

There are two families of these. The tracking shot, where a camera vehicle drives alongside or ahead of the subject and films it moving. And the mounted shot, where the camera is bolted to the subject car itself - on the hood, the door, a low arm off the front bumper - so the car sits locked in frame while the road rushes underneath. Most car films are a mix of both, cut together so fast you never notice the rig changed.

The rigs, in order of how much they cost you

The tracking vehicle is the big one. This is a second car - ideally something with a large opening, a fast estate, an SUV with the tailgate up, or a proper camera car with a jib arm - that carries the operator and the camera and drives in formation with the subject. In Dubai that's often just a well-chosen SUV with the boot open and the operator strapped in, not a Hollywood insert car. The point is a stable platform that can hold speed and hold a line next to the hero car.

Then the gimbal. A three-axis gimbal - a Ronin-sized head, hand-held or on a small arm - is what kills the vibration coming up through the chassis. It doesn't make the car look fast. It makes the shot look like it cost money instead of looking like someone filmed out of a window. Cheap car video skips this and you can feel every expansion joint in the road as a little jolt in the frame.

For mounted shots you're into arms and suction mounts. A suction cup rig - the industrial kind with a pump and a gauge, not a phone holder - clamps to the paint or glass and holds a camera off the body of the car. A longer articulating arm or a hood mount pushes the camera further out for that low, wide, front-three-quarter look where you can see the wheel turning. This is the part people get nervous about, and they should - you're trusting a vacuum seal at speed over a car that isn't yours. You clean the panel, you check the gauge, you add a safety tether, and you don't do it in 45-degree afternoon heat when the suction is fighting you. There's a reason a lot of Dubai car work happens at dawn.

Speed, spacing, and the radio

The actual driving is where it's won or lost. Two cars moving in close formation at a matched speed, one of them with a person half-hanging out of it holding a camera. That's not a filming problem, it's a driving problem, and the camera operator is the least important driver on the road for those thirty seconds.

Everyone is on radio or comms. The camera car driver calls speed and spacing. The subject driver holds a constant, boring, predictable line - no surprises, no sudden lifts. The operator calls the frame: closer, drop back, hold, we're rolling, cut. Nobody improvises. A rolling shot that looks spontaneous was rehearsed as a slow-speed dry run first, then done for real once everyone knew exactly where the other car would be. The magic number is usually way slower than it looks on screen, because the blurred wheels and streaking background are doing the work, not the speedometer.

Wheel blur is its own small science. At too high a shutter speed the wheels look frozen and the car reads as parked and fake - the classic tell of a rushed shoot. You drag the shutter to let the spokes blur, which locks you into a lower speed, which is safer anyway. So the thing that makes it look fast is also the thing that lets you shoot it slow. I love that.

Timing to the light

Dubai gives you brutal midday sun and gorgeous edges. A rolling shot at noon is hard, flat metal, black shadows, glare bouncing off every panel of a car that's designed to be shiny. The same shot in the first hour after sunrise or the last hour before sunset is a different film - long warm reflections rolling down the bodywork as the car moves, the paint doing half the work for you.

So you build the schedule around the light, not the car. Empty roads out past the city, or the quiet stretches around the marina and the newer districts before traffic wakes up, shot in that thin window when the sun is low and the roads are yours. That's also, conveniently, when it's cool enough that the suction mounts behave and nobody's melting inside the tracking car. The expensive-looking rolling shot and the early call time are the same decision.

Why the good ones look expensive

When a rolling shot is right, everything agrees. The car is pin-sharp and dead-locked in frame, the background is a clean smear of speed, the wheels blur exactly enough, the horizon doesn't wobble, and the light is raking down the side of the car like it was poured on. It reads as effortless, which is the whole con - it took a second vehicle, a gimbal, a rehearsal, three people on comms and a sunrise.

When it's cheap you can list the reasons in a second: frozen wheels so the car looks parked, a jittery frame from no stabilisation, the horizon tilting, harsh noon light, and the subject car drifting around inside the frame because the two drivers never locked their spacing. None of those are camera problems. They're planning problems. The camera was always good enough. That's the part I wish more people believed before they book the shoot.
