Google Business Profile optimization checklist for Dubai businesses
A practical checklist for salons, garages, clinics and showrooms: what to fill in, what to photograph, how to handle reviews, and what no checklist can promise.

To optimize a Google Business Profile in Dubai, claim and verify it, pick the one or two categories that say what the business is, fill in every field accurately, add real photos, keep hours current including holidays, and handle reviews neutrally and promptly. That is the whole job, and none of it guarantees a map position, because Google has said there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
This is the how-to. If you would rather have someone keep it up for you, my Google Business Profile page covers what that involves. Everything below you can do yourself in an afternoon.
How do I claim and verify my profile?
Search for your business on Google, or in the Maps app, and look for the option to claim or manage it. If nothing exists, create one. Google decides how a business is verified, and the available methods vary, so follow what it offers you. I can't tell you which method you will get.
If an agency or freelancer helps you, give them access through Google's owner or manager invitation, never your password. Check who the owner is. A profile owned by a former employee or the web designer who set it up is a common problem.
Which categories should I pick?
As few as possible, and as specific as you can while still being accurate. Google's guidance is to choose categories that complete the sentence 'this business is a', not 'this business has a'. It says not to use categories as keywords, and not to list every service.
- Pick the one that best describes the core business as your main category.
- Add a second only if it is a real second identity, such as a garage that is also a tyre shop.
- Skip general categories that overlap. Google says it adds the more general ones itself.
- Do not borrow a category from another business that shares your building.
What should the description say?
What you do, who for, and what makes you different, in plain sentences. Google's rules are narrower than most owners expect: no links of any type, and no promotions, prices or sales. 'Best bagels in town for $5' is Google's own example of what is not allowed. It also rejects gimmicky characters and gibberish.
I believe the description has a character limit, but I could not confirm the number on Google's page, so check the field as you type. Write for a person, not a search box.
What goes in services and products?
Everything a customer might call to ask about, in your customers' words. A salon lists cuts, colour and treatments. A garage lists the jobs it actually does. A clinic lists what it treats. Be accurate, because this is the part of the profile people read when they are deciding whether to call, and a vague list sends them to the next result.
Which photos should I add?
Real ones that represent reality. Google's guidance says photos should be sharp, well lit and lightly edited. I am a photographer, so here is what I would shoot first:
- The entrance from the street, so people can find the door when they arrive.
- The inside, wide, in daylight where you can.
- The team, working, not lined up.
- The work itself: a finished cut, a repaired panel, a treatment room.
- Your logo and one clean cover image.
Google's specifications, as of my check: JPG or PNG, between 10 KB and 5 MB, with 720 by 720 pixels recommended and 250 by 250 as the minimum. Videos can run up to 30 seconds and 75 MB at 720p or higher. Skip stock images. They are against the point and customers can tell.
How do I set hours, including Ramadan and holidays?
Set your regular hours first, then use special hours for holidays and other temporary changes, which is the route Google's own help page names. Wrong hours are the fastest way to lose a customer: a person arrives at a locked door and the review writes itself.
Ramadan hours change the pattern for many Dubai businesses. I don't know the dates in advance, since they follow the moon, so set them as soon as the dates are confirmed and set them back afterwards. Do the same for Eid and any closure you know about.
Should my profile be in Arabic and English?
Write it for the customers you actually have. Google's guidance is that the business name should reflect what customers see in the real world, so I would match the name on your signage. I could not find a Google rule on bilingual names, so I won't state one. Reply to a review in the language it was written in.
Do posts and Q&A still matter?
Posts let you put an update, an offer or an event on the profile. I don't know how much weight Google gives them for ranking, and I make no claim that they move you up. Use them when you have something to say.
Q&A has changed. Google discontinued the Q&A API for developers on 3 November 2025, and reports say it is replacing the public Q&A on Maps with an AI Ask feature that answers from your profile, reviews and photos. I don't know its current state in the UAE. So I would not seed questions. Put the answers in the description, the services list and the FAQ on your own website, where you control them.
How do I ask for reviews without breaking the rules?
Neutrally, and to everyone. Google's policy prohibits discouraging negative reviews or selectively soliciting positive ones, which is what review gating means. It also prohibits incentives such as payment, discounts or free goods in exchange for a review.
Agency write-ups say Google's April 2026 update added two more: staff review quotas, and asking staff to solicit reviews with specific content, such as an employee's name. Google's policy page lists both. So no targets for your team, and no scripts.
- Send the same neutral invitation to every customer, with a direct link to your review page.
- Do not offer a discount, a gift or a prize for a review.
- Do not ask only the customers you know are happy.
- Do not set staff quotas or tell staff what to say.
How should I reply to reviews?
Promptly, in the reviewer's language, and without a script that sounds like one. Three shapes cover most cases:
- Positive: thank them for something specific they mentioned, in one or two sentences.
- Mixed: acknowledge the part that went wrong, say what you have done about it, and invite them to contact you directly.
- Negative: stay calm and factual, apologise for what is true, give a way to reach you, and do not argue in public.
In my experience the Google Maps list and the rating on desktop can lag behind what is really there, and its sort menu sometimes won't open. The reviews panel in Google Search, which you reach through the review count beside the rating, is more reliable for checking what a customer sees.
Does consistent name, address and phone matter?
Yes, in a plain way. Google says that businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local search results, and that inaccurate information can stop a profile appearing for relevant searches. Use the same name, address and phone number on the profile, your website footer and the other directories you appear in.
How do I track what the profile brings me?
Tag the website link on your profile so your analytics can tell profile visits from everything else. A UTM link with a source and medium is enough, and my UTM builder makes one without a spreadsheet. Then read the Performance section of the profile, which counts things like calls, direction requests and website clicks. I'm going from third-party guides for those metric names, so check what your own dashboard shows.
What can't this checklist promise?
A map position. Ranking is Google's decision, and a complete profile only removes reasons to be left out. I also can't promise your listing will not be suspended. Agencies and reinstatement vendors reported a wave of suspensions starting around 27 April 2026, including profiles that looked compliant. I found no explanation from Google, and a local TV station reported one affected business getting no answer when it tried to verify again. Verification and reinstatement are Google's decisions, not mine or yours.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to see results from a Business Profile?
- I don't know. It depends on your area, your competitors and Google, and nobody outside Google can give a reliable number.
Can I pay Google for a better Business Profile ranking?
- No. Google's help page says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Paid ads are a separate product.
Can I delete a bad review?
- Not on your own. You can reply, and you can report a review that breaks Google's policy, but whether it comes down is Google's decision.
Do I need a website if I have a profile?
- A profile sends people to your website, so yes, a slow or thin site wastes the visit. A simple, fast one is enough.
