What a compliant UAE tax invoice needs

If your business is VAT-registered, the FTA requires a full tax invoice to carry a specific set of fields. Leaving one off is the kind of thing that looks fine until an audit. A compliant tax invoice must show:

  • The words "Tax Invoice" clearly displayed.
  • Your business name, address, and Tax Registration Number (TRN).
  • A unique, sequential invoice number and the date of issue.
  • The customer's name and address - and their TRN if they are also registered.
  • A description of the goods or services supplied.
  • The unit price, quantity, and the amount excluding VAT, in AED.
  • The VAT rate (currently 5%) and the VAT amount charged, in AED.
  • The gross total payable, including VAT.

The 5% rate, and when you don't charge it

The standard UAE VAT rate is 5%. Most goods and services fall under it. Some supplies are zero-rated (0%) - certain exports, international transport, some healthcare and education - and some are exempt, like specific financial services and residential property. If you are not registered for VAT, you should not be charging it at all: turn the VAT toggle off and this becomes a plain invoice.

TRN format

A UAE Tax Registration Number is 15 digits. It identifies your business to the FTA and must appear on every tax invoice you issue. If your customer is VAT-registered and you have their TRN, put it on the invoice too - it is required on a full tax invoice where the customer is registered.

When a simplified invoice is allowed

For supplies under AED 10,000, or where the customer is not VAT-registered, the FTA allows a simplified tax invoice with fewer fields - you can skip the customer's details and show the tax-inclusive total rather than breaking every line out. For anything larger, or a registered customer, issue the full invoice above. This tool defaults to the full format because it is the one people get wrong.
